This was a battle fought between the Wessex Saxons and the Vikings

The Vikings had invaded England and taken Northumbria, East Anglia and Mercia. Wessex alone stood against the invaders. A Viking force had recently taken Reading.

THE BATTLE

A group of Vikings left Reading and headed towards the Anglo-Saxon camp at Englefield. The Saxons succeeded in killing a number of Vikings forcing them to retreat to Reading.

CONSEQUENCE

The Vikings retained their hold on Reading.
