This was a battle fought between the Byzantine army and a joint Norman-Lombard force

BACKGROUND

Arduin the Lombard was a former member of the Byzantine army who had decided to ally himself with the Normans. It was agreed that if victorious land in the Lombard region would be split between Arduin the Lombard and the Normans.

THE BATTLE

The Byzantines made several attacks on the Norman lines but all were withstood. The Normans then made a counter-attack which included a cavalry charge that the Byzantines could not withstand.

The Normans went on to conquer much of Southern Italy
