THE BATTLE OF VAL ES DUNES
10th August 1047
This was a decisive battle fought between the combined forces of William Duke of Normandy and Henry I of France against Guy of Burgundy.
William, the bastard son of Robert Duke of Normandy, had inherited his father’s title. Guy of Burgundy, one of William’s kinsmen, felt he had a better claim to the title and mounted a challenge.

This was William’s first battle. He had gained the help of Henry I of France and together they met the challengers to William’s position at Val es Dunes. Although William was outnumbered he was a better leader than Guy of Burgundy and managed to defeat the rebels.
Decisive victory for William
Although there was still opposition to William’s position he was now more secure.
