This was a battle fought between the forces of Olaf Haraldsson and a peasant army of men loyal to Cnut

BACKGROUND

The Norwegian Olaf Haraldsson had been displaced and forced to flee following the battle of Helgea in 1026. In 1030, following the death of regent Hakon, Olaf returned to retake Norway.

Decisive victory for the peasant army loyal to Cnut. Olaf Haraldsson was killed in the battle.

CONSEQUENCE

Cnut kept control of Sweden. His son Swein became regent but his rule was not popular and Olaf’s son, Magnus was invited to be King by the people.
